Axiomatic Approaches to Information Retrieval--University of Delaware at TREC 2009 Million Query and Web Tracks

چکیده
We report our experiments in TREC 2009 Million Query track and Adhoc task of Web track. Our goal is to evaluate the effectiveness of axiomatic retrieval models on the large data collection. Axiomatic approaches to information retrieval have been recently proposed and studied. The basic idea is to search for retrieval functions that can satisfy all the reasonable retrieval constraints. Previous studies showed that the derived basic axiomatic retrieval functions are less sensitive to the parameters than the other state of the art retrieval functions with comparable optimal performance. In this paper, we focus on evaluating the effectiveness of the basic axiomatic retrieval functions as well as the semantic term matching based query expansion strategy. Experiment results of the two tracks demonstrate the effectiveness of the axiomatic retrieval models.

This year the Center for Intelligent Information Retrieval (CIIR) at the University of Massachusetts participated in seven of the tracks: ad-hoc, ltering, spoken document retrieval, small web, large web, question and answer, and the query tracks. We spent signi cant time working on the ltering track, resulting in substantial performance improvement over TREC-7. For all of the other tracks, we u...
متن کاملEvaluating the Effectiveness of Axiomatic Approaches in Web Track
In this paper we describe our efforts for TREC 2013 Web track. We focus on evaluating the effectiveness of axiomatic retrieval model on large data collection. Axiomatic approach basically searches for the retrieval functions that satisfy some reasonable retrieval constraints. We also evaluate the semantic term matching method which does the query expansion by choosing the semantically related t...

To facilitate understanding of information as well as its discovery, we need to combine the capabilities of the human and the machine as well as multiple methods and sources of evidence. Web Information Discovery Tool (WIDIT) Laboratory at the Indiana University School of Library and Information Science houses several projects that aim to apply this idea of multi-level fusion in the areas of in...

With our participation in TREC 2005, we continue experiments using Terrier, a modular and scalable Information Retrieval (IR) framework, in 4 tasks from the Terabyte and Enterprise tracks. In the Terabyte track, we investigate new Divergence From Randomness weighting models, and a novel query expansion approach that can take into account various Web evidence, namely content, title and anchor te...
